Recently I was exploring the old colonial palaces of New Delhi, and was blown away yet again by the extraordinary vision of the place. New Delhi was essentially the last great building project ever conceieved by the British Empire. The inauguration of the city is one of my favourite scenes from my upcoming book, and for the first of my paid-subscription Substacks, I thought I'd give you all a sneak peak of the chapter! It will be published next August.

Viceroy Irwin, had always excelled at charades, and that week, the crowning achievement of his tenure as Viceroy of India, he beat everyone. It had been a dark and cold month in the city, unusually rainy and thick with fog, and the opening hockey match of the celebrations had been played under “ominous black clouds.”[i]
